Marin Laufenberg Presents at Association for Theatre in Higher Education Conference
September 8, 2025
In July, 2025, Dr. Marin Laufenberg, Teaching Assistant Professor of Spanish and Director of the Spanish MA Program here at ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ, presented at the virtual annual conference of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE). The conference this year situated presentations and working sessions around the concept of “The Real” within theatre, performance, and theatre instruction. Dr. Laufenberg participated in the working session entitled “The Games We Play”, a session that delivered an embodied and participatory workshop and asked attendees to play, observe, and discuss games as an agent for pedagogy, social change, and transformation.
Laufenberg presented an original classroom activity that she has used in the virtual setting with literary theatre students in the Spanish MA program, titled “Mis Documentos” or “My Documents” in which students develop and share an oral, visual, and performative archive in a way that blurs truth and fiction and questions the meaning of the term “documentary”. Students select and animate objects (photos, artifacts, documents, souvenirs) of the past to bring them to life in the present, telling the story of the objects in a playful, imaginative light. Often the presentation engages directly with the audience, asking them questions, and addressing them directly. If they re-tell from their memory as children, they often incorporate imaginative retelling which exposes the affective experience of childhood. Role-playing and game-playing like this are generative, and playful humor can permeate the presentation. This game or activity is inspired by Argentine playwright and director Lola Arias’ documentary theatre work from the past few decades.
Laufenberg also enjoyed conversations with colleagues across the country on the current state of theatre education in higher education, sharing challenges and creative ideas about how to support and foster learning in particular in the online environment.
