Center for Learning and Instructional Excellence Offers Array of Resources for Teaching and Faculty Development
August 28, 2025
The Bengal Success Center is a hub for both student and faculty resources including University Honors, Tutoring, Bengal Bridge, TRIO, and the Intensive English Institute. Within it, the Center for Learning and Instructional Excellence offers programming and collaboration opportunities across campuses for new and established faculty, along with staff and graduate students. The Center for Learning and Instructional Excellence aims to be a driving force for student success, interdisciplinary collaboration, faculty development, and continuous improvement in teaching excellence.
Among the many resources available, the Center takes a three-prong approach in offering a variety of event series and programming designed to enhance pedagogy and student learning, ultimately benefiting ISU students.
These events are available to anyone interested but are designed for faculty to be able to connect and engage in meaningful conversations about teaching and learning. All faculty are welcome to participate, and these programs are just the beginning. The Center plans to host workshops on high-impact practices, practical approaches to assessment, and more.
“What’s different about how we are approaching this, is we’re creating an umbrella organization to capture faculty professional development and student support, which we’re hoping will create more interaction between the two,” said Doug McGee, director of teaching, learning, and assessment. “Faculty professional development and student learning go hand in hand, and the more we can get them working together, the better off students are going to be. This model folds them together with an eye towards providing the best support we can for students.”
Lunch and Learn Series
The Center is seeking faculty to host one-hour-long "bring your own lunch" series for faculty, students, and the ISU community in the following categories:
- Faculty Lecture Series – “One Thing Everyone Should Know About…”
What is the one lecture that you love? What is one thing about your discipline or research that you would like to tell everyone about? Is there one book, one theory, etc. ? The topic is entirely up to you! Hosts are provided a stipend of $200.
- Master Teacher Series
Share innovative or effective teaching strategies you have used in your classes. These sessions will spotlight practical ideas others can take and adapt in their own teaching. Hosts are provided a stipend of $200. The first of these will be held on September 3 with host Rick Wagner, covering academic freedom and responsibility.
Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs)
An FLC is a collaborative group of faculty who engage in active, semester-long dialogue and shared inquiry around a specific teaching and learning topic to enhance professional development and improve student outcomes. Examples include a pedagogical book club, strategies for student engagement, or tech tools for teaching. You’ll set the focus and help guide the conversation. Leaders of an FLC will be provided a stipend of $600.
New Faculty Cohort Mentoring Program
For new faculty, a joint effort between the Center and Academic Affairs includes building additional services for new faculty, such as a new cohort mentoring program. Two established faculty members will be placed with two or three new faculty to facilitate open communication and resource sharing as professors and instructors begin their time at ISU. This cohort design will not be separated by department, but available for anyone across campus, regardless of college or teaching level.
A series of new faculty development workshops will be held every other Friday beginning September 5 will focus on student services and introducing faculty to resources available on campus. Topics span from faculty evaluation process, promotion and tenure process, meet and greet with Office for Research, balance between teaching, research and service, and more.
The Center is also planning to host book launches for faculty and staff who have contributed significantly in writing, editing or publishing a book.
The Center space in Rendezvous 129 is available for lectures, faculty retreats and other events.
The Center is open to feedback regarding proposed topics for all of their planned and future programming. Submit ideas and find events at isu.edu/learning/get-involved.
