College of Business Professor Represents ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ in Malta as Fulbright Specialist
August 28, 2025
Over the summer, Professor of Healthcare Administration Dr. Ruiling Guo traveled to University of Malta (UM) in Malta, an island country in Southern Europe, as a Fulbright Specialist. Selected based on her academic and professional achievements and demonstrated leadership in her field, Guo was one of only 400 U.S. citizens chosen annually to be a part of the program. Sponsored by the United States government, the Fulbright Specialist program is designed to build lasting connections between the people of the United States and those of other nations. UM specifically is known as a hub for international academic exchange, offering a rich learning environment, robust research opportunities, and extensive global collaborations.
“My two-week visit to UM was both professionally rewarding and personally memorable,” said Guo. “During my time, I collaborated with esteemed UM professors on two research projects, delivered a seminar, and gained invaluable insights into Malta’s history, culture, and healthcare system.”
Guo’s collaborative research projects focused on evidence-based management in European healthcare leadership and the impact of leadership styles on patient safety outcomes.
“Although evidence-based management is widely recognized as a best-practice model in healthcare management decision-making, little research has been done in Europe,” said Guo. “I led the design of an assessment tool, and before the conclusion of my visit, we successfully piloted the instrument. For the second project, my UM collaborators and I established a framework for a systematic review to examine how leadership styles influence patient safety outcomes.”
Guo concluded her visit by delivering a seminar titled “Evidence-Based Management Practice in Healthcare Decision-Making: From Research to Application”.
“This event brought together UM faculty, graduate students, and local healthcare leaders,” said Guo. “During the seminar, I was able to share my U.S.-based research findings, introduced ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ, and facilitated discussions on the challenges and opportunities for improving healthcare quality and access in healthcare systems.”
“Although my visit lasted only two weeks, it was highly productive,” Guo continued. “I completed my Fulbright project activities, built meaningful collaborations, and developed a deeper understanding of Malta’s history and culture. Most importantly, I worked with outstanding professors, established lasting friendships, and forged partnerships that will continue well into the future. Since returning to the United States, I have remained in close contact with my collaborators via email and Zoom, and together we are advancing our projects with the goal of sharing our research findings with the international scholarly community.”
“We are delighted that Dr. Guo was one of fewer than 400 scholars across the United States to participate in the Fulbright Specialist program this past year,” said College of Business Interim Dean and ICCU Endowed Professor of Management Dr. Alex Bolinger. “The College of Business is passionate about developing leaders in the healthcare sector. Dr. Guo's work in Malta, and the great ideas that she is bringing back to ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ from that collaboration, is yet another tangible example of that commitment.”
