Seeking Tutors to Help K-3 Grade Students Read
September 10, 2025
America Reads is looking for ISU students to become tutors to help elementary students learn to read. Tutors may volunteer time or be paid through work study if eligible. You do not need to be an education major to become a tutor.
This program works with K-3rd-grade students as a way to reduce and prevent illiteracy and give our youth a better chance at success in school and in life. America Reads tutors are a vital resource in making that happen, and tutors can be placed at any school in ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ. It's a fantastic way of networking and building an impressive resume for your future career or education.
The tutoring reading course (EDUC 1170 Tutoring Reading) is a 1-credit course that provides training and materials for tutors. There is also an option to tutor without registering for the class.
It is helpful to classroom teachers if students can dedicate a set time and day for tutoring (or several days per week). We will work around your schedule! There is a recommended minimum of two hours per week and/or at least 20 hours per semester. We do not have a script or specific method used in tutoring. You will be working with the classroom teacher to assist students with basic literacy skills-sight reading, timed readings, letter and sound identification, etc. You will need to have a current background check before going into the schools.
Please reach out to Michaela McGee at michaelamcgee@isu.edu or Michelle Schroeder at michelleschroeder@isu.edu if you have any questions.
