Working with Student Athletes

September 15, 2025

Dear faculty,

Our Bengal athletes work hard every day with their sport and in the classroom. Last academic year, every team averaged above a 3.1 GPA and the average student athlete’s GPA was a 3.4. If you need any support with student athletes in your classes, please let me know. Part of my job as the Faculty Athletic Rep (FAR) is to answer questions related to travel, attendance, or anything else relevant to student athletes.

We also have a fantastic team of athletic academic advisors that can serve as an additional resource:

  • Pepper Kaneko (pepperkaneko@isu.edu) - Associate Director for Athlete Academic Services
  • Jami Eborn (jamieborn@isu.edu) - Athletic Academic Advisor
  • Rebekah Cervantes (rebekahcervantes@isu.edu) - Athletic Academic Advisor
  • Lexie Stapleton (alexisstapleton@isu.edu) - Athletic Academic Advisor

Finally, below are a few informational items that can help you have conversations with student athletes throughout the semester:

  • Student-athletes should be treated just the same as all students. Provide student-athletes the same opportunities as every enrolled student.
  • Student-athletes should not get any special privileges.
  • Sometimes student-athletes miss class as they represent ISU. Please see ISUPP 5040 for the official student absence policy.
  • Student-athletes are not permitted to miss class due to practice, meeting a coach, working out, or receiving medical care.

Student-athletes are not all the same. Some are on full scholarships, but there are others on partial scholarships, and some receive no scholarship support at all. Just like our overall ISU student population, student-athletes are a diverse group. Thank you for your efforts with ISU athletes. I hope you have a great semester. Please let me know if I can support you in any way.

Best,

Karen Hartman
